CANADIAN ACADEMY OF SPORT AND EXERCISE MEDICINE (CASEM)

The Canadian Academy of Sport and Exercise Medicine (CASEM) is an organization of physicians committed to excellence in the practice of medicine as it applies to all aspects of physical activity. Student membership is only $25/year, and includes access to CASEM newsletters, clinical resources, and email updates about courses and opportunities. In addition to their annual Sport Medicine symposium, CASEM runs team physician courses, and several other Sport Medicine courses. Most of these are open to students at discounted rates.

SPORTS FIRST RESPONDER COURSES

These courses are taught by an athletic therapist or physiotherapist who are very experienced in sport. You will learn how to manage emergencies in a sport event environment. Many events will ask for volunteers with this certification, or give preference to those who have it. Other participants are usually therapists and physicians with sport coverage experience, or those who are interested in event coverage, so it’s also a great networking opportunity.

CONTACTING ORGANIZATIONS

Be sure to check out the websites of any upcoming National or International level Games. Large scale games usually have their websites up years in advance. Some examples include: The Pan Am Games, Commonwealth Games, European Games, and Asian Games. If you're interested in a specific sport, you can check the National Sport Organization's website for upcoming events (e.g. Skate Canada, Hockey Canada). They often post volunteer opportunities and will require you to go through a selection process. Examples of volunteer support roles include: media, officialing, medicals, doping control, accreditation, etc. There are also organizations that provide coverage at a variety of large events like marathons, obstacle course races, and festivals (e.g. Odyssey Medical). Consider asking your university about your own insurance coverage for events, as injuries can happen!
